What's New at Singing River
Hospital System?
Renovated SRH
Nursing Unit Ready for Patients
Singing River Hospital marked a milestone in ongoing renovations
with the opening of the ortho/neuro nursing unit One East. A
ribbon-cutting ceremony/Open House of the unit was held April 1.
Tours of the unit followed.

“We are dedicated to providing world class facilities for our
patients and our employees, and the renovation of this unit
reaffirms that commitment,” said SRH
Administrator Lynn Truelove.
The $1.5 million project included aesthetic improvements, such as
new flat-screen
televisions and beautifully tiled bathrooms. Clinical upgrades
feature hospital beds
with built-in weight scales, recliners with removable arms and a
patient monitoring
system integrated with the nurses’ station call system. There are 31
rooms on the unit, which is the model for upcoming room renovations
throughout Singing River Hospital.
The finished product was the result of superior teamwork, Lynn said.
“Nurses on
One East had input in the design choices, and worked with our
facilities support
personnel and a local contractor to create an environment that best
meets the needs of both patients and employees,” he explained.
Holly Lawrence, RN, said she’s excited to be back on One East, and
she’s confident
patients will enjoy the improvements as much as the staff. “It was
just not very
pleasing to the eye before the renovation,” she said. “The rooms now
have the smaller, flat-screen TVs. They’re less bulky, so they don’t
stick out from the wall. Also, the beds are more comfortable.”
Sean Cooley Scholarship Winner Tabbed
Elizabeth Hellman received a $500 scholarship from Laura Cooley and
Doug Mansfield at the G/I/ Museum in Gautier on Wednesday.
Cooley began the scholarship in honor of her husband, Sean Cooley, a
National Guardsman killed in Iraq. The scholarship is awarded to
nursing students in their second semester of school at the Jackson
County campus of MGCCC who have ties to the military and a good
grade point average. During the presentation, Laura
Cooley offered a brief remembrance of her late husband. “He was a
very caring, giving person, and we want his spirit and giving
personality to continue,” she said.
