The Regional Cancer
Center excels in providing comprehensive care
close to home
Providing state-of-the-art equipment and a comprehensive range of services
to its patients is not just another check in the approvals process for The
Regional Cancer Center at Singing River Hospital System. It’s our mission.

In
keeping with that mission, The Regional Cancer Center offers exciting, technology called the Clinac® 21EX, a medical
linear accelerator used for delivering Intensity Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT).
Standing approximately nine
feet tall by nearly 15 feet long and weighing about 18,700 pounds, the
medical linear accelerator plays a vital role in carrying out
IMRT. By
using computer-generated images to plan and then deliver even more tightly
focused radiation beams to cancerous tumors than is possible with
conventional
radiotherapy,
the accelerator allows clinicians to deliver precise radiation
doses to the exact shape and depth of the tumor.
The availability of this new
technology at The Regional Cancer Center provides great benefits for our
patients. With IMRT, radiation oncologists can significantly reduce the
adverse effects of doses on healthy tissue. Lower doses to healthy, normal
tissues may mean fewer complications or side effects for the patients.
With
early detection, IMRT can eradicate tumors before the cancer spreads. It
can be a non-invasive alternative to surgery in some cases and is usually
done on an outpatient basis.
In
addition to providing outpatient chemotherapy in Pascagoula at The
Regional Cancer Center, patients can also receive this treatment at Ocean
Springs Hospital. A medical oncologist makes regular visits to East
Central Medical Center in Hurley to offer consultation services and
follow-up care to the community. Our oncologists also work closely with
national cancer programs to develop and administer treatment plans. These
services show our commitment to offering patients the widest range of
solutions and comprehensive treatments so you can stay close to home and
get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
SRHS’s Regional Cancer
Center has received approval from the Commission on Cancer of the American
College of Surgeons. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved
cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to quality care
close to home, including a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art
services and equipment; information about cancer clinical trials,
education and support; and ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
Singing River Hospital System has been a
participant in clinical trials for many years but is now advancing its
research efforts with a $3.4 million
Cancer Disparities Research Partnership grant from the National
Cancer Institute.
When
patients begin the arduous process of thinking about treatment and ongoing
care for their condition, they can be assured that they will receive the
best in diagnostics and treatment as well as a lifelong program of
follow-up care at The Regional Cancer Center -- without traveling great
distances from home.
